This Privacy Policy explains how Captionly – Auto Captions & Scheduler (“Captionly”, “we”, “us”, or “our”) collects, uses, and shares information when you use our mobile application and website.

1. Scope

This policy covers our iOS app Captionly – Auto Captions & Scheduler and related webpages. It does not cover third-party sites or services you may access via sharing or links.

2. Data We Collect

2.1 Content you choose to process

  • Videos & audio you import to create captions. Processing occurs on your device using Apple frameworks where available.
  • Generated captions (text + timestamps) stored locally in the app. You may export them (e.g., SRT) or burn them into a new video file.

2.2 Purchase & subscription data

  • In-app purchases are fulfilled by Apple. We receive non-sensitive purchase metadata via RevenueCat (e.g., entitlement status, product identifier, anonymized app user ID) to determine Pro access. We do not receive your full payment details.

2.3 Scheduling & analytics (optional)

  • Scheduling: reminders you create (time, optional note). These can remain local or sync to your account if you enable cloud sync.
  • Analytics: app usage aggregates or basic performance counters; if enabled, these may be stored in Firebase Firestore. We do not collect advertising identifiers for tracking.

2.4 Diagnostics

  • Crash & performance logs (e.g., from Apple or Firebase Crashlytics if enabled) to improve stability. These may include device model, OS version, and timestamps—never your video content.

2.5 Cookies (website)

  • Our website may use essential cookies for security and basic functionality. Any analytics cookies will be disclosed and, where required, offered with controls.

3. How We Use Data

  • To provide app features: generate captions, export files, schedule reminders.
  • To manage subscriptions and entitlements (e.g., unlock burn-in export).
  • To maintain safety, debug, and prevent abuse or fraud.
  • To analyze product usage in aggregate (if analytics is enabled) to improve the app.
  • To communicate with you about updates, security notices, and support.

4. How We Share Data

  • We do not sell your personal data.
  • Service providers process limited data on our behalf:
    • Apple (speech recognition frameworks, in-app purchases, notifications)
    • RevenueCat (subscription status)
    • Google Firebase (optional sync & analytics, if enabled)
    These providers are bound by terms and only process data to deliver their services.
  • Legal & safety: we may disclose data if required by law or to protect rights, safety, and integrity.
  • Business transfers: in a merger, acquisition, or asset sale, data may transfer as permitted by law, with notice where required.

5. Data Retention

We retain data only for as long as necessary to provide the services or as required by law. Local content (your videos and captions) stays on your device unless you export or sync it. If you delete the app, local data is removed by iOS. For synced data, you can request deletion (see Your Rights & Choices).

6. Your Rights & Choices

  • Access & correction: you can view or edit captions before exporting; contact us for account-linked data.
  • Deletion: delete local content in the app or delete the app; request deletion of cloud-stored scheduling/analytics.
  • Opt-out: you can disable analytics (if present) and revoke notification permissions in iOS Settings.
  • GDPR/UK/EU: where applicable, you may have rights to access, rectify, erase, restrict processing, portability, and object.
  • CCPA/CPRA (California): we do not sell or share your personal information for cross-context behavioral advertising. You may request access/deletion of personal information.

7. Security

We use technical and organizational measures to protect your data. No method of transmission or storage is 100% secure; please export and share files responsibly.

8. Children’s Privacy

Our services are not directed to children under 13 (or the age required by your jurisdiction). We do not knowingly collect personal data from children. If you believe a child provided us data, contact us to delete it.

9. International Data Transfers

We may process data in the United States and other countries where we or our providers operate. We take steps to ensure appropriate safeguards for international transfers as required by law.

10. Changes to This Policy

We may update this policy from time to time. The “Last updated” date reflects the latest changes. Significant changes will be communicated in-app or on our website.
